What To Expect In White Water Rafting

What To Expect In White Water Rafting

by Sue Carpenter

One of the sports that have received a lot of attention because of the excitement it offers is salt river white water rafting. This involves navigating a raft, together with the other passengers, using your paddles. This can sound like a relaxing activity but the waters you will encounter is anything but. They will be rough and other hazards, like big rocks, will probably be present.

Beginners and experienced passengers can choose from a number of grades. The beginners can choose the lower grade so they can enjoy the experience and climb up to more challenges as they progress. The highest level are areas considered to be very hazardous since safe passage cannot be guaranteed.

Because of the risks involved in this type of sport, regulations have been made in order to increase the safety of individuals who want to try it. Depending on what regulations exist, the outfitter may be required to have some form of certification. He may also be required to maintain a standard with regards to his practices and his equipment.

The guide should be experienced so that he could keep all the passengers as safe as possible. The passengers for their part are required to sign waivers so that they realize the consequences of not following the guidelines. The guides typically familiarize the passengers about the guidelines and what they can do in case they fall in.

Those who have never tried out the sport will be taught how to maneuver the raft, especially when it needs to be carried. The guide will also discuss or demonstrate the different techniques for paddling. He will also discuss what kind of directions will be given and what safety procedures have to be followed.

Because you will essentially be spending your time navigating these areas, then be prepared to be wet most of the time. The right clothes have to be worn so you can be comfortable. To help ward off the cold, consider wearing a wetsuit. The rocks can be sharp so the guide may recommend that you wear shoes.

While paddling is a big part of the trip, traveling on land is also another. Your accommodations may be far from the site so you have to ride a vehicle to get to it. This means that after you have finished, when you will be wet, you will still have to travel. Ask your guide about how you can bring a change of clothes so you can be more comfortable.

Given the possibility that the raft will be overturned or that you will fall in, then few items should be carried on the raft with you. If you are carrying something though, make sure that it will not be damaged upon exposure to water and that it is securely attached to you. It is best if you just leave the important things behind on land.
