Safety at Sea: Abandon Ship Bag Essentials

Safety at Sea: Abandon Ship Bag Essentials

by Noel Swanson

Let's face it: Boats sometimes sink. Yes, it can even happen to YOUR boat - despite your vast experience, excellent skills, chart plotter, backup GPS, radar, AIS, fire extinguishers and all the other systems, procedures and equipment you have put into place to avoid that ultimate disaster. The fact is that you might run into a half submerged container in the middle of the night. Or your engine might catch fire. Or your rig might be blown overboard in a storm - and then puncture your hull.

Of course, catamarans are much less likely to actually sink than a monohull. Mainly because they don't carry around a huge lump of lead in the form of a keel. But, even so, it is wise to be prepared in case the ultimate disaster does strike.

What do you need to survive if your boat does sink?

First, lets be clear about the goal. There are two:

1. You need to stay alive until the rescue services can find you.

2. The rescuers need to find you as soon as possible.

Clearly the amount and type of equipment you need for survival depends in large upon how soon you will be rescued. With that in mind, lets look at what equipment you need:

Most important is, of course a liferaft. Without one of those you aren't going to stay alive for too long in the deep blue ocean! We personally have a Viking RescYou. Whatever type you get, do get it regularly serviced and make sure you see it activated so you know how it works and what comes with it.

Next, you need an abandon ship bag. This is a handy, floating waterproof bag that contains the essential items you will want onboard your life raft. Often called a grab-bag, ditch bag, ditch kit or flee bag for obvious reasons.

Now, here's the key. The bag must be waterproof. You are about to jump off your boat into the ocean! probably in the middle of a raging storm. You do NOT want all your gear to get soaked.

Essential too that the bag, with its contents, actually floats. Again, test it out, so you don't have a nasty surprise watching your essential supplies descend to the depths just when you need them most.

I personally use the type of dry bags used for kayaking and rafting. They're cheap, rugged, and work well.

Finally, the bag must be stored where it can be easily reached. Remember, the chances are that you will need it in a hurry, in the middle of the night, in the middle of a storm, with your boat either on fire, full of water, or upside down. You don't have time to be digging deep into your under-bed storage locker.

Talk to your tour operator, or make queries with the embassy websites from the nations you'll be visiting.

If you are bringing pets, you need to make sure that they can travel. Train them beforehand in order to avoid embarrassing ruckus made by your pet. Keep a leash so your pet will not be able to roam around and get lost. If you are going on a long travel, it is best if you bring your own pillows and blankets. If you have difficulty in sleeping, sleeping pills will be helpful to make sure you can rest well. You should take the pill right before you enter the plane. This way, you can ensure the effectiveness.

Be wise about food allergies when going to a foreign country to avoid bad liaisons. If you do have an allergy, make sure to express this in their language. This will allow you to communicate to others what foods you have an allergy to so that they can be kept out of your meals.

Tips And Advice For Holidays

Tips And Advice For Holidays

by Keri T Lambretta

Planning your next vacation or business trip can always be worrisome. In the process you may forget some things that you should keep in mind for a safe and worry free trip. The article below contains some one of a kind advice that you can easily incorporate into your next journey for full success.

When traveling abroad, get an international calling card. These cards provide you with discounted rates on minutes and can be an affordable way to call back home. Using the hotel phone with your credit card can be costly, sometimes to the tune of hundreds of dollars. You will likely find that your cell phone doesn't work either. Plan for the calls you need to make and you will save money.

Plan the things that you are going to pack so you can pack light. You do not have to be without the things that you want to have or that you need. Just try to take the clothing that you can mix and match, so you can have several different outfits, while only taking a limited amount of items with you.

While traveling to a foreign country is an exciting experience, it can also be risky if you aren't familiar with its laws and customs. For that purpose, the State Department of the United States created a website (travel.state.gov) that you can visit to find out a wealth of information on the country to which you are traveling, including facts on crime, health conditions and popular attractions.

When traveling, always ask about discounts. If you're a student or a AAA member, ask before purchasing museum or event tickets. Some debit or ATM cards may get you free admission at certain museums. Remember, it doesn't cost a thing to ask, and it may save you something!

If emergency oxygen deploys while you are on a plane with your child, place your mask on first. Parents will instinctively want to help their child first, but if your brain is starved of oxygen you could be rendered useless and put both you and your child in danger.

If you have medical conditions or if you want to be on the safe side during your trips, consult with foreign consulates to get a list that contains local physicians that speak and understand English. Your hotel's concierge can also recommend doctors, including the one that they may use.

When you are traveling, it is important for you to bring along your own healthy food and snacks. Eating at fast food restaurants might be tasty, but you will not get any great nutritional value from them. You should pack your own foods that include fresh fruits, veggies, and cheese.

When you plan a vacation trip, be flexible about your destination. While it can be fun to establish a routine by revisiting a favorite vacation spot, maintaining some variety in destinations makes your vacations more memorable and relaxing. Additionally, selecting a different destination can be key to saving a little money when the vacation budget is tight.

'Glamping' is the latest way to enjoy a travel and stay trip. The cross between camping and being in a hotel means younger families have a way to enjoy the outdoors with all the messing around.

Australia: Expensive? You're kidding, right!!

Australia: Expensive? You're kidding, right!!

by Jonny Blair

Who told you Australia was expensive? Someone that didn't do it on the cheap like me...

I've lost track of how many people that have told me that Australia is an expensive place to travel. They must be living the luxury lifestyle if that's the case. Australia, if anything was one of the cheapest places I have ever travelled round, so much so that I made bucketloads of money when I was there, indeed enough to take 4 months off work. People, and particularly young backpackers are clearly going to the wrong spots, or perhaps ill-informed, badly prepared or simply spending money in the wrong way. Here's 12 reasons to prove the myth wrong, all from my own experience of living in Australia.

1. Sleeping - OK, yes, hostels are great, but you have to take a break from them. Don't be spending your entire time in hostels getting drunk! Camping is by far the best option for living and travelling cheaply in the land down under. You can find a cheap tent for $15 - 20 and in some places you will be able to camp out for free. Make your cheap tent your home for the next few months as you "backpack" and camp your way round Australia. Lots of campsites have toilets and showers too, and some of them are even close to places where you can get part time and temporary seasonal or harvest jobs.

2. Eating - If you really want to eat out, head to pubs that have $10 steaks and similar offers. They often also give you a beer or a soft drink as part of the offer. A useful hint I used while in Australia is checking out pubs or bars that offer cheap big meals and monitor the times they apply. I noticed that most of them are around lunchtime - that's when they have the most specials. Come on it's hardly a big deal to transfer your biggest meal of the day from dinner to lunch. You can easily just eat cereals and toast for breakfast. And you're a backpacker so don't be afraid to head into Hungry Jacks or McDonalds for a cheap breakfast. Hungry Jacks also offer unlimited refills on drinks - so why not take your flask in and top it up? They're won't chase you out you're a paying customer. McDonalds also offers free wi-fi. You can always fall back on good old vegemite sandwiches! One of my favourites!

3. Transport - Don't be getting flights around Australia! I lived there for a couple of years and I never used an internal flight. Use the bus company Greyhound and book them early, even better idea is to hook up with others, get a car and off you go on a road trip - you have a car now which you should equip for sleeping in and stay on or near campsites with it. Cut your costs by sharing petrol and sharing lifts to work. Also if you are getting a Greyhound bus get it at night so that you save money on accommodation. These are simple and obvious things by the way but often neglected by travellers. Other good places to look are hostel notice boards and local travel websites. Gumtree and Facebook can also be useful.

4. Apply for and get a valid Working Visa (of some sort) - You're going to an isolated country so if you are eligible for a working visa - get it - you're likely to be offered work anyway, I cannot understand those who go there and don't bother getting a working visa - even if you are only going for 2 months, you can easily pick up a bit of temporary work in Australia. Temporary jobs are available everywhere and only a fool would arrive in Australia without the options to work. In a week you can easily earn over 1000 AUD, as I was doing.

5. Don;t pay entrance fees into places. There's a host of FREE things for you to see and do in the land down under. For example - hiking, fancy dress parties (make your costume), beaches, walking round cities etc. Some museums are even free as is walking along Sydney Harbour Bridge. Save money on wildlife viewing too. Australian marsupials such as kangaroos, wallabies and koalas can all be found in the wild for free so don't be paying entry to theme parks. A decent spot to see Koala Bears is Kennet River on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. Kangaroos and wallabies are hard to miss if you get out of the cities...

6. Money saving coupons, tokens and vouchers - Seriously these types of coupons are everywhere and most travellers miss them. Try picking up leaflets and magazines in bars, travel agents, bus stations, airports etc and you will be extremely surprised to hear that they often contain money off and free entry vouchers. Sometimes you even get a free beer - head to the bar to get your free beer then leave!

7. Woolworths and Coles value brands - i remember meeting a couple of English girls moaning about the price of everything in Australia while drinking Del Monte orange juice for breakfast along with Kellogg's Cornflakes! If you can't take yourself down a rung or two for a few weeks or months by buying the value brands, then you honestly have no ground to stand on moaning about the price of things!

8. Don't Go To Nightclubs after 10pm - At weekends and after 9 or 10 pm most bars and nightclubs tend to charge entrance fees and put the price of drinks up. Why bother paying more for your drink. If you really must go to a club, go on a weeknight and head in before 9pm. But honestly the best option is to head to the Bottle Shop (Liquor Store/Off Licence) and get a takeaway (carryout) and drink at the hostel or campsite with your new mates. These nights are often the best!

9. Don't Spend Too Much Time On the Internet - Facebook is great and all that but seriously you didn't go to Australia just to tell other people where you are and what you're doing. So stop moaning about the price of the internet - yes it costs a lot so don't pay it - simple. Here's a few alternatives (if you have brought a laptop with you) - eat at McDonalds and use their free wi-fi, buy a coffee in an internet cafe that has wi-fi (at least you have a coffee for your money), stay in a hostel that has free wi-fi. If you don't have a laptop - borrow from travel buddies if you really need to get online. And a long term cheaper option is to buy a USB stick which acts as a wireless internet modem - this is only recommended if you plan on staying in Australia for a while.

10. Try not to book things in advance. Despite what you hear - don't be bookings too many things in advance. Advance bookings normally mean deposits and in Australia your plans change a lot so that hostel you just booked a night in for 2 weeks time might just be a wasted deposit as you've met another group of backpackers doing a road trip and now you're going with them. Only book something if you are 100% SURE you'll be doing it.

11. Laundry - The obvious is to wear the same clothes over and over again, and hand wash them. Done that myself manys a time. If you really feel the need to use laundry - get 2-3 cotton buds on sticks and stick them in the coin slots in the machines to get free laundry. Most of you reading will know this trick. A well known travellers "secret".

12. Fake student ID - Again things become cheaper when you pull out a student card. Nobody really cares if its fake or not. Give it a risk and save some dollars.

So all in all - get yourself to Australia and do it on the cheap. It really is a wonderful country to explore your way around. You will just love it.

Go to Australia, economise, live cheap and love it. You'll probably have better fun than those you don't and come away moaning about the price of the wonderful land down under.

Things To Do Before Hiring Removalists Brisbane

Things To Do Before Hiring Removalists Brisbane

by Andrew Miller

Removalists Brisbane or Sydney etc are people who will surely help you carry all of people's possessions to a new home, in a new city. But, should one let the removalist company that he has hired, do all the work? People might think that if they need to do some of the work, then what are the removalist companies there for? The answer is right in front of our eyes.

People, especially those who are opting for removalist Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne etc. for the first time, have little or no experience in the matter. All they know is that they must pack the items that they need to transfer from their old home to the new one. After that, the removalist company is in charge of the actual transportation procedure. Now, though the process sounds simple at one look, there are serious complications that can crop up. In order to not panic and handle these situations well, one must be aware of what these complications are. Also, it is important for a person to know what kind of help he can expect from his removalist company, in case he faces such complications.

The common answer that people give is a truck. Now, it is not as simple as that. A truck can be of certain different sizes. Moreover truck is a rather large vehicle. So, if one has been living in a small apartment and has only a few things that need to be moved, does it make any sense for them to hire a truck?

Things to Do Before Hiring Sydney, Melbourne Etc:

Transport Used By Removalists Brisbane, Melbourne etc:

* Packing is a rather common service that most removalists Australia offer. Removalists Melbourne, Sydney or Adelaide will even supply the items that one will need to pack. With just a little extra payment, on can get the company to do all the packing for them.

Most removalists Adelaide, Brisbane etc have other vehicles that can be supplied to customers who need it. These are commonly the vans. These vans are not as large as trucks but they are bigger than a standard car for sure. Thus, a person who has a smaller amount of things that have to be moved can easily opt for a van. This way, he can pay for exactly that amount of space that he would be using.

If would make the task of unpacking a lot easier if people knew which boxes contain what. Since it might not be possible to write the names of all the things packed in the box, it can be a good idea to write the name of the room that they belong to. This is what people can do even before they hire removalists Brisbane.

So, the best idea is to actually do some of the work on one's own, before the Removalists Melbourne or Brisbane etc. This will make the job easier for Removalists Adelaide or removalists Sydney etc.

Magical island of Gulang Yu

Magical island of Gulang Yu

by Jonny Blair

Another of my incredible China adventures in recent times involved a visit to this crazy island known as Gu Lang Yu! Basically it's an island off the coast of the Fujian Province and is reached by ferry from the city of Xiamen, itself another interesting Chinese city which I have yet to write about separately!

Gu Lang Yu has fascinating history, splendid views, colonial architecture and quirky restaurants, cafes and shops. It is very touristy and very busy but it is definitely worth checking out. It might be a cliche, but try your best not to miss it when you're in Xiamen (although remember your journey is your own so you don't have to listen to me!!). The oddest part of this bit of travelling is actually that Xiamen the city is on an island itself. Having arrived in Xiamen by bus (from Shuyang Town) we then walked around, had our lunch and headed on a ferry to another Chinese Island, this one is Gu Lang Yu!

Getting there? - The only real option is to take the ferry - it leaves from the port of Xiamen - get yourself to the harbour and you can't miss it. There is a ferry that goes straight to Gu Lang Yu - i.e. directly across, the other option takes a detour and gives you a decent view of the city and the island.

This by the way is totally worth doing - you get longer on the boat and you get to relax and check out the views. It's was a bright "sunshiney" day when we were there and the views were exceptional. The ferry cost us 15 RMB each for a return (in March 2012), but the prices vary and I've heard you can get a free ride at off peak times if you stand. It gets busy.

What is there for me to see and do on Gu Lang Yu? - Despite being a small island, this is a great island and here are my top sightseeing tips:

1. Climb to Sunlight Rock - Climbing to the highest point of the island of Gulang Yu is recommended. Sunlight Rock is the English translation and the views are exquisite and the exercise of the climb up is also good for you. To get there basically follow signs for Sunlight Rock climb when you are on the island and you will find it, through the flurry of cobbled streets. Entrance to walk up there is a fee of 60 RMB which also includes a small memorial hall. It's a rip off and it's over-priced, especially for China, BUT I'd say do it as the view is spectacular as you can see.

2. Colonial Style Buildings - Gu Lang Yu features a bizarre varied range of Colonial Style Buildings. For some unknown reason it reminded me of Macau in parts. There are British, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese and Chinese style buildings showing a diverse influence on this island. There is probably not another place in China that is like this (I class Hong Kong and Macau as separate to China).

3. The little cobbled streets - narrow, busy and with plenty of cafes and restaurants to keep you amused. It doesn't even feel like you're in China!

You will notice how Gu Lang Yu differs from mainland China particularly in the street layout, style and architecture. Enjoy your walk round it and take it all in - it's a novelty in China!

4. Music - there is a heavy music influence on Gu Lang Yu and it's famous for it. Famous pianists have hailed from this small island and there are regular music events and festivals worth watching.

* There are also museums, colonial residences, a cable car ride, a Protestant church and a waterfront garden as well.

Where to stay on Gu Lang Yu? - There's a hostel on Gu Lang Yu which is difficult to miss, it's on one of the main streets when you arrive by ferry and is prominent. It's a Hostelling International - it's probably the cheapest option on the island.

That's basically it - Gu Lang Yu! Head over for a day trip and see it, or spend a night there and enjoy the restaurants and bar life after dark. It's a splendid place to visit and extremely different to parts of the main Fujian Province

An Irish Pub in La Paz Bolivia

An Irish Pub in La Paz Bolivia

by Jonny Blair

I'm surprised it's taken me this long to actually write about my trip to the Wild Rover in La Paz, Bolivia, also known as the world's highest Irish Pub. And it's official. I have also been to Paddy Flaherty's in Cuzco which claims to be the highest (and many others in Peru and Bolivia do), but for now the limelight is on the Wild Rover and the madness within.

Housed in the lofty Bolivian city of La Paz, you can find the Wild Rover Backpackers on 1476 Comercio Street. I wasn't actually staying there mind you, I chose to stay at the nearby Loki Hostel instead (it's literally round the corner). On the first floor of the Wild Rover backpackers is housed a cosy, friendly wee Irish Pub, also of course known as the Wild Rover. At an elevation of well over 3,000 metres above sea level, this little enclave away from the monstrocity of La Paz had the nice honour of being the world's highest Irish Pub. So I just had to pop in!

The Wild Rover is a decent place not just for the pub - you can organise tours from it - to all over Bolivia and indeed they helped book my Salar tour and a few of my buses. I didn't have time to do everything I wanted in La Paz but I found time for a relaxing beer in the world's highest Irish Pub and I stood on the pitch at the world's highest football stadium.

I glanced at the walls of the pub and was pleased to see a picture of Geordie Best on there. He's a Northern Irish hero of mine and he made it up on the wall of the world's highest Irish Pub - I reckon he'd have been proud of that!

Even-ing things up I guess. Most Irish pubs only have the Irish Tricolour, and politics aside, I always carry my Northern Ireland flag! The proudness of being Northern Irish exists on the island as well you know. This was a very happy moment, but not the best moment in the pub...

Then as I sat down at the bar, I recognised the accent of the guy serving me! It was a strong Northern Irish accent! The first other Northern Irish person I had met in South America. Serving me an ice cold Pacena beer was Grant McParland, all the way from Carryduff in County Down, Norn Iron!!!

Grant gives up working in order to join me for a beer - amazing. Having a chat in the world's highest irish pub with a guy from just down the road. Grant puts on his County Down Gaelic top and we chat away!

The football was also on, with Liverpool playing live. The match was live as this was mid afternoon when I had popped in, and the UK would have been a few hours ahead. It was a European game against Utrecht, and I met a girl from Dublin also in there who was wearing a Liverpool shirt and supporting the reds.

Against the background of the Irish Tricolour flag, Grant and I got a few photos of my travelling Northern Ireland flag.

The likes of Ash and Van Morrison came on the dukebox as Grant connected up his iPod to the speakers in the pub! I then spoke to the manager Jack about maybe working there on my travels, but alas I was headed to Peru too soon and wasn't able to add a fourth continent to my "worked in an Irish pub" list.

At night the Wild Rover really does get wild!! It's a party pub and all sorts of things go on - fancy dress, necking drinks, cocktails and nudity. Forget how high an altitude you are - enjoy the party!

I did a Slainte and Cheers with Grant - amazing having a beer with a guy from my homeland yet some 3,600 plus metres above sea level. No Guinness so it was Pacena the local stuff!

,

The pub itself may appear hidden at first and please note it is open to the public - you can head straight in and don't need to be staying there.

Situated on a random street and sinking deep into Bolivian mountains is where you find the Wild Rover and I have been to an Irish pub in 6 out of the 7 continents (didn't find on eon my trip to Antarctica).

A lifestyle of travel indeed and I loved every minute of my trip to The Wild Rover - the highest Irish Pub on the planet. Definitely a great place to relax and thanks to Grant the barman for serving me, chatting away, posing for flag photos and providing such awesome music and a fabulous travel experience!

In Ireland the phrase "Top o the morning to you" is used. Here in La Paz it was more like "top of the world to you!"

Select Holiday Accommodation Options Before Booking

Select Holiday Accommodation Options Before Booking

by James Whistle

Have you recently found out that you are going away on business or holiday in the near future? Once the destination for your journey has been decided, your next step is to find the right accommodation. Find accommodation for your trip is usually something that many don't think about until the last minute (and they usually end up having to look for last minute accommodation online) - but it is important to find the right place to stay, as this may determine whether or not your entire trip turns out.

The reason why finding the best accommodation in the area is important is because you'll want to find a place that is near certain locations, such as the airport, a particular venue or perhaps even a bus stop - your accommodation location will determine how easy it is to reach any of these locations. Also, ending up in a cheap and nasty motel may result in hours lost in sleep.

The best way to find great, yet affordable accommodation in your area is to look online - viewing accommodation options online not only allows you to view photos and see what facilities are available, but some also allow you to book accommodation online. When looking online, be sure to search a range of different keywords to get a variety of options: try searching for accommodation, motor lodges and motels.

Motels and motor lodges provide a great accommodation option for travellers, families and corporate clients. The prices of each place will entirely depend on the star rating of the motel/motor lodge and the location - this allows you to choose a place to stay that suits your set budget, so you can choose either luxury accommodation or cheap accommodation.

No matter what size of group you are travelling in, you can rest assured that there will be a room option for you. Whether you need a single suite or a family suite, most motels and motor lodges can accommodate to your needs.

Motels and motor lodges offer a range of facilities for you and other guests to enjoy - from wireless broadband internet to guest laundry to Sky digital television and more, you can take advantage of a number of different facilities that they have to offer. When looking at accommodation websites, be sure to check out any specials or discounts they may have on offer, so you have some extra change in your back pocket for the trip.

Are you travelling New Zealand, and you're looking for a central location to stay at? Palmerston North is a great location to stay at, as it is based in the central part of the North Island. There are a range of Palmerston North accommodation options available in the area - to find the best one, take a look at the different options online.

Do you have tickets to the Rugby World Cup? Don't leave it to the last minute to find Rugby World Cup accommodation - get in fast to secure a great place for you to stay. Once again, staying at Palmerston North is a great idea for the World Cup, as it is the central location to many of the rugby game venues (including New Plymouth, Napier, Rotorua and Wellington). The great thing about booking into one motel or motor lodge during the Rugby World Cup is that you don't have to worry about packing and moving with every different game change.

Don't leave it until the last minute! Be sure to find the right motor lodge or motel that is suited to your holiday or business travels. If you need assistance on a particular hotel, give them a call - their friendly staff is always there to help you out.

Travelling And Bed Bugs: The Link Travellers Overlook

Travelling And Bed Bugs: The Link Travellers Overlook

by Helen Price

Do you travel frequently? Have you just come home from a month-long backpacking trip across mainland Asia, pedalling along the temples of Angkor, crossing the rivers of Laos, diving in Malaysia, and feasting on freshly caught seafood in Vietnam while crossing borders via train or overnight bus? Yes, your life is the envy of most people, because indeed, nothing beats the feeling of waking up to a brand-new day in a new place.

But then you go home and you realise that you have taken with you far more than you have bargained for. Apart from the memories and countless photos, you might have taken home bed bugs for souvenirs as well. And this is true for people who are always on the road. Sleeping in inns, hostels, dormitories, trains, and sleeper buses poses travellers to bed bugs and other pests which tend to stick to clothing and backpacks, carried around until homestretch.

Bed bugs, like all other pests, are a nuisance to daily life, causing itch and irritation to the skin. Thankfully however, the problem on bed bugs is conveniently solved with effective pest control. Pest management professionals could ably eradicate bed bugs and prevent them from breeding by looking at infected spots of your home and surrounding areas and disinfecting their breeding grounds. Pest Control In Singapore entails a highly technical process, not the least since it involves chemicals not anyone can administer. This means that as soon as you discover an infestation, do not take it upon yourself to eliminate them, spraying random chemicals that are not made for bed bug eradication in the first place.

As soon as you eliminate them, you have to assure that you at least reduce their recurrence, particularly from any of your planned travels later on. To efficiently do this, you need to take a bit more caution as to where you place your belongings when you're out travelling. Bed bugs cling to cloth, and the last thing you need to do is stow your backpack and clothes on the floor and just about any random corner of your hostel. Keep them inside your rucksack instead, or maybe hang them where they are less likely exposed.

Once home, you need to empty your backpack away from your couches, carpets, and particularly your bed, and put it directly into the laundry for washing. Separate your soiled clothing from your travels from the rest of your laundry as well. Wash also all the other clothes you brought with you on the road even if you didn't use them. Include in the laundry the cloth pouches you often overlook since they are as susceptible to tiny pests as every other fabric in your backpack.

Delighting In Holiday Getaway Time From Squaw Valley

Delighting In Holiday Getaway Time From Squaw Valley

by Salley Belote

Our family was looking for something different when we were planning a winter vacation. We wanted as much outdoor snow fun as possible. That's what drew us to Squaw Valley. Now that we've actually been, we can tell you what a joy the trip had been.

There are so many things to do on the mountain that someone in California heads up. And of course you want to start with the skiing right? This is the main draw, and it's exactly why you're going. Well for starters you're going to find Olympic quality courses.

After that I was ready for the real thing, and they have some beautiful courses. Including some really wide open ones where you can enjoy the mountains around you. But also some racing runs too, for skiers that love speed.

Of course there's also the Olympic courses. Most of them totally untouched from the time that the Olympics were held in Squaw Valley. It's cool to actually get to do a run down a championship quality course.

But you can only ski for so much of the time that you're on vacation, right? Sometimes you need a bit of a break, and that's where the Snoventures come in. These are Squaw Valley's other attractions, and my family really loved them.

What kids don't like dogs? Ours are the same, and we had so much fun at the dog sledding area. They had tons of dogs, and you can even go on sled rides with the family too!

I also particularly enjoyed the snowmobiles. These were really fun to race around, and give you a beautiful way to explore Lake Tahoe on your own schedule. Squaw Valley and Alpine ski resort have tons of snowmobile tracks out there too.

Finally, you have to try the snow tubing. Everybody likes riding down a big hill in a tube, and this is one of the best places in the world to do that. Our favorite family activity by far, and the one thing we can't wait to do again next time we visit Squaw Valley.

Campervan Hire Company Alternatives to Britz

Campervan Hire Company Alternatives to Britz

by Tim Ahern

If you are thinking about taking a vacation in Australia and renting a campervan or motorhome, then chances are you will come across the company, Britz, in your research. But maybe before you go ahead and hire from them, you should have a quick look at some of the alternatives that don't have the marketing muscle to get your attention. After all there are over 60 other companies vying for you campervan dollar. Read on to find out about some competition to Britz.

Undoubtedly, Britz is the leading player in the Australian market. Not only do they have the powerful "Britz" brand, but also some of Australia's other famous brands like Kea Campers, Maui Campervans and Mighty Campers. Probably the biggest competitor to these is Apollo Campervans. The largest privately owned chain in Australia, it consists of multiple brands: Apollo, Cheapa Campa and Hippy Campers. These 2 companies alone combine to have the 7 largest and best known brands across Australia (and New Zealand).

If searching for a campervan rental in the budget price range, you are going to find Hippy Campers and Mighty Campers, however you are also going to come across Wicked Campers. Wicked are a key player in the budget market but make little impact on the other market segments, so if looking for a mid-range or luxury style, don't bother with Wicked. Wicked have a reputation for being unruly and unreliable. They, as a company, are known bend rules and ethics and also have a reputation for under-servicing their vehicles. However, they are also dead cheap and the vehicles work often enough that they have expanded their fleet across the world in to many, many countries. They are a business model success story. However, if the stories you hear are true and you are looking for a budget alternative, then try looking in to Awesome Campers or Travellers Autobarn. Awesome Campers has had rapid expansion in the last couple of years so must be doing things to keep people coming back and Travellers Autobarn has been winning awards for some years now. Put them on your list to research for prices.

But it is really the mid to upper price range where Britz is king of the campervans. So who else is worth taking a look at in this market range? Well, if, for now, we are looking an alternatives to the Apollo family as well, there are still plenty to choose from. One worth mentioning in the luxury range is Around Australia Motorhomes. This crowd doesn't skimp when it comes to vehicle quality with all their vehicles being top of the line Winnebago's to satisfy the traveller that wants everything. If you are in the luxury motorhome market for you next trip, then definitely look in to getting a price of these guys. They are family owned and large enough to have plenty of options, but small enough to care.

Another mid-range company worth mentioning is Energi Motorhomes. This company has been creeping up in reputation for some time. They don't seem to have a massive marketing machine so don't seem to come up regularly in Google searches (unless you are specifically looking for them), but they are worth the effort to look in to. Alternatively, if you are looking around at web sites that give booking results for multiple companies, then keep searching until you find a site that includes a price for Energi in the results. Until you include these guys in your search results you are not looking at the best field of options.

And one additional company to mention is Camperman Campervans. Camperman has been growing rapidly over the last couple of years, modernizing their fleet with the latest Toyota Hiace's which is the same model that all the major players use. Keep in mind, therefore, that you can get pretty much the same vehicle as the major players for a lesser price. It is something that should pique an interest when researching your campervan hire. They also have depots at all the major points along the east coast of Australia, so there is plenty of choice on where to pick up and where to drop off - just like Britz. All in all, they offer a strong alternative in the mid-priced campervan hire market, and should definitely be considered when doing price and style research.

So, if you are researching campervan, motorhome or RV hire in Australia, then there are definitely some alternatives to look at other than Britz and the other major players. Only a handful have been discussed here but, for example, if hiring a campervan from Sydney, you will find that there are at least 30 different campervan companies to choose from. So make sure when you are researching who to choose from, that you find a website that compares prices on at least 20 of these. There are plenty of sites out there that will only show you the 7 major companies. Don't sell yourself short and be limited to these. There are plenty of alternatives to Britz Campervans in Australia.

If you are still keen to research Britz Campervans Australia then there is plenty of info about them. And if you are looking for a place with awesome price comparisons then take a look here.
