Sample Delightful Cuisine in Portugal

With piri piri being one of the most popular, a variety of spices are used in Portuguese cuisine. As well as things like garlic, saffron and cinnamon, these small fiery chilli peppers make dishes in the country rich and flavoursome.

Used as a seasoning or marinade, piri piri chicken is one of the more well-known dishes in Portugal, and is very popular among tourists as well as locals. Made from crushed chillies, it also includes herbs such as basil, oregano and tarragon, plus things like lemon juice and zest, onion, garlic, pepper, salt, bay leaves and paprika. The sauce originated in Portugal but is now widely used around the whole world.

Albufeira is a city in Portugal found in the Algarve region, a popular destination among holidaymakers. As well as boasting golf courses, bars, restaurants, a marina and an abundance of hotels and apartments, the food here is delicious. Mainly comprising seafood as the daily fishing boats bring in large quantities of cod, monkfish, tuna, sardines, clams, prawns, oysters and squid. Much of this fish is barbecued; in particular the grilled sardines are a speciality.

Desserts include caramel custard, custard tarts and rice pudding, which are traditionally served with a sprinkling of cinnamon. Selections of cheeses, mainly made with sheep or goat's milk, are usually available as well. Pastries are very common in Portugal, found in coffee shops and bakeries. While each town has a specialty, many are rich egg-based custards but others are chocolaty, creamy or made with marzipan.

There are vast amounts of cafes, restaurants, bars and shops in the nearby area as the four star accommodation is located in the heart of the city. With traditional low fisherman's cottages and churches on the cobbled streets, Albufeira also has a fishing village that is worth a visit.
