Become a Smart Shopper Who Finds the Best Discounts

Become a Smart Shopper Who Finds the Best Discounts

by Blaise Barreto

The cost of everything seems to go up all the time. However, there are still many ways to save money if you know where to look.

Everyone is familiar with coupons, and most of us use them at least once in a while. Coupons are a shopping technique that you have to use consistently if you want to save a substantial amount. Coupons are not hard to find, as grocery stores and other stores commonly publish mailers or hand out flyers that contain lots of them. Another place to find them is in your daily newspaper. When you're looking to save money, pay special attention to products that are (relatively) non-perishable like canned goods. This means you can use coupons when you have them for items with a long shelf life. Restaurants also frequently issue coupons, such as buying one entree and getting the second one at half price. If you simply buy things when you need or want them, you probably aren't getting the best prices on many items. You can enjoy impressive savings by timing your purchases strategically. Learn to seize opportunities to get things at discount prices that you'll need in the future. With clothing, for example, you can get better discounts choosing items that you don't wear for another six months or so. You'll usually find the deepest discounts for items that are appropriate for the season that's just ending. If you're planning to buy a new car, wait until the latter part of the year. Dealerships will start to offer substantial discounts on previous year's cars the moment a new model is available.

Sometimes the best way to save money on something is to request a better price. This may not work in a supermarket or convenience store, but for many higher ticket items it's often effective. Car dealers are used to haggling with customers, and this is expected. This can also work in other types of stores, especially if they are individually owned and not chain stores. If you never think to bargain, you will often pay more than you have to for items. Managers and business owners are often willing to bargain if it means making the sale. You never lose anything by asking if you could get a better deal.

If you buy everything brand new, you are overlooking many ways to save money on used goods. Many people spend more than they have to buying new items just because they don't like the idea of buying something used.

If you're not in the habit of browsing at yard sales or garage sales in your area, you should start doing so. To get the best prices at garage sales, attend them towards closing time; on the other hand, early in the morning is when there will be the biggest selection. Thrift shops and consignment shops are also places where you can find good deals on used clothing, furniture, electronics and appliances. When you start looking at all the possibilities for finding quality used items, you realize how helpful this can be for saving money. Money does not go far these days, which is why it's so helpful to know how to find the best discounts. You have to learn how to spot the best discounts and be ready to seize such opportunities when they appear. Timing plays a big part in this equation as well. The above suggestions for finding discounts are a good start, and if you're resourceful you can come up with quite a few other possibilities as well.
