The population surged as people moved from rural areas into the now urban one.

Fifty districts that are divided into upwards of 160 subdistricts make up the whole of the city. Members of government are elected to run the districts. The city's official seal features Indra, the god, holding a lightning bolt. The Lightning bolt is said to be a weapon against the threat of drought.

Although a hub for business, travellers also come to see the spectacular sights of the city. Perhaps the most famous landmark is the Grande Palace. It was once the home of the Thai King as well as the seat of the government. It is considered a spiritual charm int he Thai Kingdom. The Wat Phra Kaew, translated as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha contains this treasure from the 14th century.

Another temple to visit is the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, or Wat Pho. Wat Pho is the largest temple in the city. A massive, gold leafed Buddha in a reclined position is the feature of this temple. Guides who speak English are available as well as therapeutic massage and blessings from monks.

Many visitors plan a trip to one of the floating markets. They include Damnoen Saduak. Bang Ku Wiang MArket, Tha Kha and Taling Chan Market. A taxi, boat or tuk tuk can deliver you to a market where vegetables, tropical fruit and other local offerings are available.

It is easy to find a hotel in Bangkok. The hard part may be in choosing among them all. Many fine choices are available, all convenient to the local attractions. Tourists and business people can find what they are looking for whether it is a large chain or a small unique place.
