Visiting London? Find the Perfect Soundtrack

London is one of the world's greatest cities. Steeped in history, culture and entertainment, England's capital provides a fantastic getaway, even if it's just for a weekend. There are plenty of bargains to be found too, with many hotels in London to choose from, ranging from budget to luxury, and transport around the city is relatively cheap.

London is known as the pre-eminent location for music for many people around the world. It provides the backdrop for a number of famous songs, as well as being the spiritual home of rock and pop. So when you're visiting London, make sure you have these songs on your music player.

With lyrics that may encompass the band's politically-conscious punk ethic, the vibe of London is captured perfectly with The Clash's best-known album, London Calling. The track reflects the quintessential Britishness that was running through London during the 1970s.

First recorded by Ralph McTell in 1969, but covered countless times by musicians since, 'Streets of London' is a song that is both poignant and catchy in equal measure. Originally intended to be called Streets of Paris, the song was based on McTell's experiences playing music and rambling across Europe.

Arguably, The Kink's Waterloo Sunset is the most famous and most played song about London of all time. Lead singer Ray Davies was a master of the lyric, symbolising London with unique imagery. The song tells the story of a lone narrator watching two lovers crossing a bridge on the River Thames, near Waterloo Station. It is a track remembered most, not for its local pride, but for its typical British melancholy.
