Surviving A Female Midlife Crisis

Surviving A Female Midlife Crisis

by Grace Daniels

Men are typically the sex identified in reference to a midlife identity crisis. For men this can involve creating sudden changes in life, including extramarital affairs, divorce, excessive spending and shiny new cars. While men are still affected, a growing number of women are also suffering from a female midlife crisis.

This occurs for women between the ages of 35-60, and may vary from woman to woman depending on life circumstances, to include finances, relationship contentment, employment status, level of satisfaction in personal achievements and goals, and overall assessment of personal achievements in relationship to age.

Such a crisis affecting women may result from women feeling job and life pressures, including job marketability, success levels, and a sense of excessive life demands. This may result from reflecting on life achievements, or lack thereof. Women may begin investigating other life choices if they feel life lacks progress or importance.

Women experiencing a house empty of children for the first time are most susceptible, as it is only now they can really feel at ease to concentrate on themselves. The previous life they lived may now feel unsatisfying and lacking purpose. Women with a sense of boredom and hopelessness sometimes enter into extramarital affairs, and are just as apt to do as men.

Other female symptoms include radical changes in appearance, an attempt to ignite a more youthful perception and attitude. Some women during this time also opt for plastic surgery, excessive dieting, tattooing, and surround themselves with younger friends. Symptoms also include drinking, partying, and an overall feeling time is running out.

There are things women can do to prevent a full blown crisis from taking shape. Hopelessness, impatience, lack of interest in sex, separations and forming new attachments are all signs of a an imposing problem. Such feelings and associated behaviors can fluctuate from female to female. Not everyone will exhibit radical changes, and may simply be depressed for no reason, or dissatisfied with current lifestyles without a cause. Analyzing causes will assist women in identifying symptoms and solutions in how to resolve overwhelming feelings of hopelessness.

Not all changes are negative. Some changes are needed, such as continued education to make oneself more marketable in the workforce, and updating ones appearance is not always a bad thing either. It is when it is taken to the extreme, and other erratic behaviors are associated with it that it has become a problem.

But there are solutions for women suffering from a female midlife crisis. Solutions such as identifying why changes are occurring and what can be done about it may stop the crisis. Other solutions might include finding solutions to boredom and communicating your emotions to a friend or partner. Also eating healthy, a conscious effort to think positively, and refusal to make any big life changes until depression or erratic behavior stops may help prevent harsh results later. Females dealing with such a crisis may also need to consult a doctor if the feelings do not pass.
