Namibia, a Wonderful Vacation Spot for Photographers

Namibia, a Wonderful Vacation Spot for Photographers

by Stacey Parker

There are few locations in the world that can provide the visual effect that Namibia can provide. You have seascapes, colonial cities, wildlife and sand-dunes all in one journey! Namibia is a country with large open spaces where you can really enjoy Africa at its best. It is not touristy and you will really find a closeness to "mother earth" that it is difficult to find in other places.

Namibia is divided into 4 main areas. To the north you have your Kavango and Caprivi regions which are the less arid areas of the country. Here you will find dense woodlands. The Himba people stay in the neighboring Kaokoland in their typical way and it is possible to find their village and talk to them to find out about their faith, their food and their wedding ceremonies. The precise location of the village changes as they "move camp" rather regularly. Typically, the Himba tribe is quite tolerant of the vacationers and allow photographs to be taken.

To the West you have your Namib Desert and Coastal plains. You mustn't miss out on the dune fields in the Namib-Naukluft Park and also the Sand Dunes in Sossusvlei, which are among the highest in the world. You can likewise see the Museum and the aquarium or go fishing or quad-biking over the desert dunes or, if you are especially adventurous, you can take a microlight plane over the desert to take some remarkable pictures.

Namibia tours are not complete without a visit to the Eastward sloping central plateau, where you will encounter the Etosha Pan surrounded by the Etosha National Park, which is said to be one of the world's grandest national parks. The Etosha Pan is a salt pan that is fifty kilometers wide and 130 kilometers long.

To the South you will see the Kalahari desert, which extends across the confining countries of South Africa and Botswana. Perhaps this is the least fascinating area of the country, but if you happen to be there between September and October, you might wish to find out if there are any flower shows. In these months, sometimes the desert is changed into an unbelievable variety of color as wild desert flowers grow at the same time and blanket the dry terrain as far as the eye can see.

You can then drive inland and visit Windhoek, which is essentially the economical heart of the country. It is situated in the central highlands. You mustn't miss driving up Namibia's tallest mountain, called Brandberg, which is two thousand five hundred and seventy three meters tall.

Namibia is truly an unusual country. For photography enthusiasts, it is the opportunity of a life time to take pics in some of the rarest settings you could ever see. Immersed in the sand and sun of this lonesome and vast country, you will practically feel as if you originate from another world altogether!
