The History of Che Guevara in Cuba

The History of Che Guevara in Cuba

by Emily Collins

Cuba is one of the most popular places in the world for a holiday despite its rather turbulent past. The island benefits from a location right in the heart of the Caribbean, practically next door to Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. However, 2 million tourists come from afar every year to make the most out of the tropical sunshine, ice-blue waters and white sand.

There are many things we associate with Cuba; cigars, spicy and flavoursome cuisine, colour-block houses, for example. But perhaps the most iconic of them all is the 20th Century communist rebel, Che Guevara.

The Argentinian Ernesto 'Che' Guevara, was significantly involved in the Cuban Revolution, and later the less successful counter-revolution attempts that took place throughout The Americas and Africa. Guevara was considered an important figure in the country's fight against capitalism during the 1950s and 1960s, joining forces with the political leader and future President of Cuba, Fidel Castro. Che had a dislike for imperialism, selfishness and inequality owing to time that he spent travelling through South America in the early years of his life where poverty, hunger and disease were rife.

Deeply troubled by poverty, Guevara trained in guerilla warfare in Mexico City in the early 1950s, with the support of Cuban exiles that he had met earlier in Guatemala. His commitment to anti-imperialism was confirmed after his training in the early 1950s. After playing a central role in the transformation of Cuban politics and economics during the Cuba revolution, Che spent the remainder of his short life (he was executed at 39) trying to foment revolution abroad, notably in the Congo and Bolivia.

CIA-assisted Bolivian forces captured Che Guevara in Bolivia in 1967 whereby he was executed without trial. An historical figure, Che Guevara's time as a revolutionary rebel still divides opinion. However, whatever people believe there's no denying the fact the Guevara was one of the world's most politically influential figures of the last hundred years, making his story a popular tourist attraction for the island of Cuba.
