Requirements for Tourist Guides Before Whale Shark Season

Requirements for Tourist Guides Before Whale Shark Season

by Linda Patterson

In the WOMEN'S ISLAND or Isla Mujeres in Mexico Quintana Roo, the travel service providers should hand in a proof of training so as to obtain new credentials.

The Isla Mujeres Department of Tourism reported that last May 8 was the last day to update and renew the credentials of the guides on swimming and observing the whale shark.

A couple of days prior to the beginning of the sighting season of what's regarded as "the biggest fish around the world - the Whale Shark", a process was started in order to undertake the correct guiding documentation, showing the training hours and to meeting the work requirements through the 2012 season.

In order to obtain the credentials to be whale shark permit holders, the guides should pass proof of 160 hours of training classes.

Additionally, they should hand in an original and copy of their guiding credential, original and copy of proof of refresher courses, original and copy of a medical certificate and proof of first aid and CPR courses, and color photographs of passport sizes with white background.

All licensees are invited by the Tourism Board to grab this chance and take all the required documentation to renew their permits because this will be the last chance to obtain them.

The Opening of Marine Development Is a Threat to the Whale Sharks

The marine development is seen to be a great threat to the gentle giants of the sea.

According to an environmental specialist, the opening of Marina is one major threat to the existence of the whale sharks, referring to a nautical development known as "Marina Esperanto". This development intends to build a tourist marina of more than 1 kilometer long from the hotel to Coromuel in Bahia La Paz.

Deni Ramirez Macias, a Mexican whale shark specialist noted that the whale shark is one of the important matters to consider when building the marine. He also said that the moment the marine is in its full operation, a greater number of vessels will be present in the area which will increase accidents and pose threats to the largest fish of the world.
