Plan An Idyllic Holiday At Watch Hill Beach RI

Plan An Idyllic Holiday At Watch Hill Beach RI

by Nita McKinney

Watch Hill Beach RI is a wonderful summer destination for swimming, sailing, fishing, hiking, surfing, and birdwatching. There's also local shopping and fine restaurants in this small town where everything is in walking distance. The town attracts tourists to it's scenic, idyllic coastline with a variety of seaside areas open to the public.

This exclusive town of wealthy summer "cottages" (mansions), is also a very affordable summer tourist destination. Stay in a hotel or inn, or rent a cottage or condo for a relaxing holiday. Boaters will find amply anchorage along the coast, and ample docking space at the local yacht club. Located between Boston and New York City, it's a perfect spot for a day trip to the seashore.

The sand spit peninsula where Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean meet, is a protected conservation area. It's on a major bird migratory route, and provides forage for other wildlife year round. It's a great area for birdwatching. Springtime, a portion of the shoreline is closed while Piping Plover birds build their nests and raise their young. In the summer this coastal peninsula attracts tourists interested in fishing, boating, swimming, skiing, and surfing. Meander among the dunes on sandy footpaths for views of the ocean, mansions, the village, and Fishers Island, New York.

East Beach is a popular recreation area on the Atlantic Ocean. Take the right of way leading from Bluff Road to the coast, then follow the shore from the old lighthouse past the renovated Ocean House Hotel. Some of the coastline on either side is private. There's plenty of public access as well, but no amenities or lifeguards. Enjoy fishing, hiking, swimming, sunbathing, and surfing.

An antique carousel marks the road to Carousel Beach. The Flying Horse Carousel is quite unique. The horses are attached to chains suspended from a center frame so they swing outwards, or "fly". After a ride for the kiddies, follow Bay Street up the hill to a family friendly swimming area with lockers, showers, and a lifeguard.

The Misquamicut shoreline is 7 miles long stretching between Watch Hill and Westerly. The State Park in the middle of that stretch has picnic tables, pavilions for shade, concessions, lifeguards and ample parking. A section is reserved for surfers. Other sections of the shoreline are town owned with rentals of paddle boats, jet skis, and kayaks. Many shops offer surfing gear for sale and surfing lessons.

Families may want to take a drive along the Misquamicut shoreline towards Westerly. Stop at Bayview Fun Park, a water park with water slides and a recreation area with miniature golf, batting cages, and go-karts. Next door is Atlantic Beach Park, a children's amusement park with an antique carousel, kiddie roller coaster, and ferris wheel. Walk to the public seashore to swim in the surf.

The shoreline is a fisherman's delight with surf fishing available on East Beach and the Napatree peninsula. This is a yachting community with fishing boats, charters, moorings, and dock facilities available during the busy season, Memorial Day through Labor Day. There are hotels, cottages, and condos to rent for extended stays. Once there, everything is in walking distance. Enjoy hiking and bird watching as well as boating, swimming, and surfing at Watch Hill Beach RI.
