Peruvian history is shrouded in the mists of time and documented as far back as 12 000 BC. Originally a civilization of hunters and gatherers who roamed the countryside various groups took to farming crops around 4000 BC. This is an area which is rich in history and home to various man made and natural famous wonders of the world. Therefore the question of Why visit Peru? is not difficult to answer in the affirmative for most people.

Original civilizations include the Incas, Chavin and Paracas. In the 16th century the Spanish conquered many local civilizations and introduced their culture and way of life into existing lifestyle structures. Battles were fought throughout numerous centuries and there were extended periods of peace and abundance. The intermingling of these diverse cultures has led to the existence of many man made wonders, delicious cuisine and splendid handmade crafts.

Mother Nature has blessed this country with what are considered as the most magnificent natural wonders. The Amazon Basin has an abundance of rare and threatened species and has been classified as one of the ten endangered biodiversity spots. The Peruvian Andes with its famous peaks are majestic and offer amazing climbs for amateurs and professionals alike. Its coastal region bordering on the Pacific Ocean has large tracts of semi desert and is dotted with cities. Five other South American countries share common borders with Peru.

Outdoor markets are stocked with arts and crafts of rare beauty, delicious fresh fruits, vegetables and interesting prepared foods. The weaving patterns and techniques are remarkable. Garments such as jerseys, scarves and wall hangings are especially worth purchasing.

The Spanish Roman Catholic Church influence is strong throughout the country. Many traditional cultural values have however been interwoven and incorporated in the church services. Other Christian beliefs are also practiced. Spanish is acknowledged as the official language. Throughout the rural areas one does however find that some very old dialects are still used by locals. In the cities English is spoken in hotels and tourism sites.

With its rich history the country offers many unusual ancient man made wonders. Sacred Valley and the mountain city of Manchu Picchu are easy to get to either by rail or road and are considered must see destinations. People have the choice of joining a tour group or visiting these sites on their own. There are organized one day and extended hiking trips to ancient sites which set off regularly from nearby towns.

Ancient towns and tiny villages allow tourists to experience a lifestyle long forgotten. The many cultures that make up this interesting country can be found in these heritage areas. If one has the time it is recommended that they mingle with the local inhabitants to learn more of their culture and history.

Numerous airlines offer flights into the country and it can also be reach by sea or by road through any bordering countries. Accommodation, day to day living, entrances fees to historical places and public travelling is considered affordable for most budgets. Why visit Peru? is therefore not too difficult a question to answer with a resounding yes.
