Fascinating Facts on Holidays in Cyprus

Fascinating Facts on Holidays in Cyprus

by Steve Alexander

If you're planning on taking a holiday to another country, it's always a good idea to learn a bit of information about its history. The island of Cyprus has a fascinating history and here are just a few things to know before visiting.

Common flowers that can be found in Cyprus include centuries-year old juniper trees and pretty strawberry trees, as well as 20 rare varieties of orchid. In fact, the island is home to some 2000 different types of flower, 140 of which can be found nowhere else on the planet. Some varieties begin to blossom as early as January, although the best time to see these natural treasures is April.

On the site of modern-day Protaras once stood hundreds of windmills, many of which exist to this day. Although it is blessed with an average of 300 days of sunshine each year, Cyprus is also one of Europe's most southerly ski resorts.

Over in Pyrgos, archaeologists have discovered 4,000-year old traces of perfume. Lavender, bay leaves, rosemary and coriander were used to create the heady aromas of these perfumes that were found in gorgeously ornate alabaster bottles tucked away in a huge underground cave. This shows that scent was produced on an industrial scale on the island.

Before the tourism industry took hold Cyprus was once the world's wealthiest nation, thanks to its rich supplies of copper which were exported across the globe. And you can forget Monaco; during the reign of the Franks and the Venetians, the city of Famagusta was the richest city in the known world.

The English crusader Kind Richard the Lionheart married his sweetheart, Queen Joanna, at Limassol Castle in 1191 according to legend. No English monarch has ever said "I do" before or since at venue away from their home ground. With many deals on cheap hotels available in Cyprus though, perhaps Prince Harry might break that tradition sometime in the near future?
