Christmas in the Canaries

Christmas in the Canaries

by Catherine McCulloch

Although traditionally Christmas is spent huddled around the fire in your winter woollies drinking mulled wine in an attempt to warm up, have you ever thought about taking a break from the norm? We've rounded up a list of things to do in the Canary Islands this Christmas.

So what should you expect from Christmas in the Canaries? Well, just because its warm doesn't mean that you shouldn't expect similar scenes. Expect buzzing town squares decked out in dazzling festive lights, nativity scenes and excitable local children preparing to open their gifts.

Another benefit of going to the Canaries during the holiday season is that the shops stay open, and don't close early like most of the ones in the UK do. Everything should be open as usual on December 25 in case you should need something. However, swimming with dolphins and climbing volcanoes are also fantastic ways to spend the celebratory occasion.

Another appealing aspect of celebrating Christmas in Spain is joining in in their cultural traditions. With plenty of carnivals and firework displays on hand, you'll also want to check out the Three King processsions, indicative of the Spanish culture. Similarly, if you are there for New Years Eve, you should partake in the tradition of eating a grape for every chime of the clock up until midnight - followed by copious amounts of cava of course!

Perhaps it's a stint in the sun, time spent with the family or just a getaway from the manic Christmas affairs in Britain, one things for sure, the Canary Islands are a perfect temperature in the winter, so you can enjoy outdoor activities while not having to worry about it being too cold either. Another great thing about the Canaries are the friendly locals -- who are always willing to lend a hand.
