Test Your Angler Skills With The Northern Pike

Test Your Angler Skills With The Northern Pike

by Ronald Jassephilld

Pikes are one of the favorite coarse fish of European anglers. Due to their aggressive hunting characteristic, many anglers enjoy having them on the opposite side of the hook. They even perform aerial stunts when struggling to get free from the hook.

Their popularity may also be because of their habit to stay in the shallows when spawning during springtime. This makes it possible for anglers to catch them from the shore during this time of the year. In the summer time, the larger females prefer the deeper waters to hunt larger coarse fish. They can be caught by anglers using boats during this part of the year. Fly fishing for northern pikes is also gaining popularity in many parts of North America.

The pike, technically known as the northern pike, are common carnivorous fish found in many bodies of freshwater in the northern hemisphere. Few have been recorded to have been caught in brackish water. In the southern part of North America, like California, pikes have been illegally introduced by game fishermen.

Female adult pikes have been recorded to weigh up to 55 pounds. The twenty-five kilogram pike caught in Germany in 1986 is considered the record holder for pikes caught using an angling tackle.

In the southern part of North America where pikes have been improperly introduced to the water system, anglers are instructed to eliminate the pike if caught. This is because the pikes predatory nature is endangering the naturally occurring species of fish in the area.

In the UK, anglers are making the catch and release practice a habit to conserve the population of pikes in their river systems. They are prized by coarse fishing enthusiasts in fishing UK. As a result, pikes have been over caught in many parts of the UK. If left unmonitored, this can lead to the decrease in population of pikes. This, in turn, results with an over population of smaller fishes. The game fishing community and the ecosystem will benefit from implementing the catch and release practice when pike fishing.
