Super Yacht Boat Shows For 2013 Provide Plenty Of Change

Super Yacht Boat Shows For 2013 Provide Plenty Of Change

by Flavia Zeng

This year's Asia-Pacific boat show season, which traditionally runs from March to May, although a few important events are held in October-November, is the most controversial yet. Is Hainan or Shanghai the best place to sell into the merging China market, or somewhere else, like Nancha near Hong Kong or Xiamen?

Staunch supporters of the Dubai Boat Show, Westport, greeted visitors from a prime position and many other leading yards like MondoMarine, Admiral Tecnomar and the Ferretti Group continued their support of the show. It is a tragedy that their loyalty is not rewarded through better marketing and service from organizers.

Strong supporters by the Superyacht Builers Association, known as SYBAss, helped turn the 4th Hainan Rendez-Vous into a mini-Miami or Ft. Lauderdale-style event ashore, but displays of big boats in-water remain severely restricted by their availability in this particular part of the South China Sea.

A set-up similar to the Yacht Havan marina on the NE side of Phukat is being considered as well for the Phuket boat show location. If approvals are given, he hopes to have the extra berths in place by next season, but 250 footers and above will still be a tight squeeze. An inquiry from a 260; vessel earlier this year had to be declined.

The marina, at the northern end of Phuket island near the airport, and located inside Phang Nga Bay rather than on the more open Andaman Sea side, is owned by a Thai family, and upmarket residences upshore have been "in the pipeline" for the best part of two decades. How, however, there are obvious signs that construction of villas may finally be getting under way, which with enhanced restaurant an shopping facilities, will make the complex that much more attractive for the Phuket boat show.

A Po Grand Marina on Phukat, a more recent facility quite near The Yacht Haven, took up some of the superyacht slack by accommodating august visitors such as the recently launched 187' Royal Huisman Derick Van Deventer told us Ao Po, although, still lacking a mooted breakwater, also has ambitious plans to increase its berthing capability, build a yacht club, and erect villas ashore. As the 50 per cent shareholder in this project, is Ital-Thai, one of Thailand's largest developers, there seems every chance that the plans will become a reality by next season.

Treadwell, also associated with the three Abu Dhabi Yacht Shows that tried unsuccessfully to challenge established Dubai Boat Show in the Middle East, is focusing his latest efforts on the fledging Singapore Yacht Show, whose earlier edition was billed "Asia's First Super Yacht Show", at One 15 Marina. This event has been scheduled over the same 18-21 April weekend as Singapore's incumbent 20+ years show, Boat Asia, at nearby Marina at Keppel Bay, thus ensuring a costly clash.

Hainan REndez-vouz's Delphine has a contract that expires net year, and since she started as Visun Royal Yacht Club in 2009, four more marinas have sprung up on Sanya's Serenity Coast, as have a phalan of five-star hotels. She has plans for further events in Hainan an other parts of China.
