Exceptional Mauritius Vacation Basics

Exceptional Mauritius Vacation Basics

by William Ryan

On the internet you will find in-depth information on practically every town and hotel in Mauritius and so it can be extremely time consuming to build up a basic concept of exactly what you want to do or where you wish to go. This short article will give you Mauritius "in a nutshell" so that you will be able to successfully decide exactly what type of vacation you would like to have.

When you arrive you will land in the only flight terminal on the island, called Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, likewise known as "father of the country" was a statesman political leader and philanthropist. He fought for the rights of the Mauritian people and brought the nation to freedom in 1968. He presented free healthcare and education, and set up a national pension scheme.

Your Mauritius Holidays thus begins in an airport devoted to an excellent man. From there you can take the M2 that crosses the island that will lead you into the more heavily occupied areas. You will show up in Curepipe and a bit further down in Rose Hills, which is the third biggest town in Mauritius. It is a good idea to stay a night in this area and appreciate some lively nightlife and shopping.

The first towns you see are found inland and not on the beach. Topographically the island is extremely intriguing as it's formed from a volcano and so inland you will see amazing dark mountains that rise from emerald green fauna. The central plateau is heavily occupied and the district is called Plaine Wilhelms. Apart from the towns pointed out before, you can likewise check out Beau Bassin, Vacoas and Phoenix.

Going further along the M2, with the airport still at your back, you will at some point show up on the opposite coastline where you will discover the capital city Port Louis. You should not miss going to the Champ de Mars Racecourse that receives over thirty thousand visitors a day if you are going to the country in between April and November. The truly good aspect of the racecourse is that citizens and travelers get to meet and freely talk to each other with the shared interest of winning the next race! Apart from the horse races, you will delight in the open air marketplace that smells of spices, the rebuilt harbor, the Royal Botanical Garden, the Government House and the Blue Penny Museum.

When in Port Louis you can decide whether you would like a nature oriented vacation or something a little more "touristy". If you go north you will end up in Grand Baie and Grand Gaube, if you go south you will not encounter any huge towns and will primarily enjoy private beach chalets.

Going north, you can drop in at the Le Pouce Nature Reserve, and then go and see the lovely town of Pamplemousses. Here it will be worth your while to visit the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens. From there it's a fast drive to Grand Baie or Grande Gaube, where you will discover some exceptional luxury hotels, resorts, dining establishments, beaches and night life. See to it you get to see some Sega Dance, which is the traditional dance of the native people.

Grande Baie is fully equipped for any sorts of water sports and so you can take pleasure in windsurfing, water-ski, para-sailing and snorkeling amoungst the coral reefs. The sea is calm and extremely warm here because of the coral reefs. You can also opt for a submarine ride to see the reefs from a new viewpoint as well as the shipwrecks. This is a truly fascinating experience!

If you would like something a lot more quiet and private though, you can go south and stop off at the Baie du Tamarin, which is internationally well-known as a perfect surfing area. There is a magnificent nature reserve inland, the Black River Gorges National Park, where you will be able to see the Pink Pigeon, the Mauritius Kestrel and the Mauritius Fody.

So, Mauritius in a nutshell? Land at the airport and take the only freeway that crosses the island till you reach the opposite coastline, then go north for the resorts and night life or south for a remote surfer vacation with nature walks.
