The Meaning Of Obstruction Lighting

The Meaning Of Obstruction Lighting

by Cherry Mercer

Obstruction lighting is used for warning pilots in case of danger. There are two colors: red and white. A system must have a backup method, because it must function at any time, even when there is a power failure. There are situations in which lights can be hard noticing, such as in bad weather conditions. There are special markings that will help pilots in case of low visibility.

The main reason for which red and white lights are used in aviation is avoiding accidents. The systems are usually installed on high terrain and towers and they have to be positioned in such a way that will allow pilots to see them from any direction. In general, LED technology is used, because it is energy efficient and durable. In order to ensure LED visibility with night goggles, there are additional features.

Some buildings can use numerous types of indicators and this usually improves visibility. Many times lamps can surround a structure, for revealing its form. Even if pilots may not notice the construction, its lights will surely be viewed. During daytime, LED indicators may not be seen well and this can be a good reason to use another type of markers instead.

A good example of alternative navigational indicators could be colored stripes, which are painted and may be quite common. Aviation hazards are indicated in a chart. Because of markings, pilots can maintain a plane on course. Exact markings can be good, as they can offer more safety. There is a standard for the navigational lights, made by the International Civil Aviation Association, or ICAO.

Companies that manufacture obstruction lights can also provide consultation services about using the systems. Advice can be given by aviation officials as well. In most cases, the lights are applied in clusters of two or more lamps. The devices are usually positioned on cranes, chimneys, tall buildings, or wind turbines. In the past, incandescent filament bulbs were used as beacons.

There are other applications of obstruction lights besides airplanes, as they can be used on the ground and constructions, for helipads. Once beacons are positioned on tall buildings, they may be seen from miles away. The light intensity for the devices can be different, from low to high. A red lamp can light intermittently or it could be on all the time. For white beacons, Xenon technology could be an alternative.

Some companies offer energy efficient LED solutions that are solar powered. For mounting the devices to the ground, there is special attachment hardware. The body of a lamp is made from materials that are highly resistant to environmental agents. Cast aluminum could be one of the best materials for a device body. The visibility could be improved by quality lens and the items can be bought already wired, for rapid installation.

In order to ensure safe flights and landings, the International Civil Aviation Association has rules regarding the use of obstruction lighting. The LED lamps are very intense. Installed on the tallest buildings and facilities, but also in towers, the beacons can make pilots aware of possible hazards. Accidents can be avoided and there are standards in the field defining how the beacons must be deployed and used.
