The Riviera Maya - A Getaway for Couples or the Whole Family

The Riviera Maya - A Getaway for Couples or the Whole Family

by Frank D Gardner

The Riviera Maya is one of Mexico's most famous seaside tourist spots, and is especially well known as a place where single tourists can mix and mingle, or where couple can come for the romantic tropical getaway of a lifetime. However, many families are just beginning o discover that it makes a great spot for all ages to escape from the hustle and bustle of big cities and crowded resorts; a quiet, beautiful seaside relaxation station ideal for sampling fine dining, hiking through ancient cities, and even indulging in a little adventure tourism for the more active members of the family.

Fine Food

Almost without exception, the restaurants on the Riviera Maya are top-notch, with a wide selection of both traditional dishes and fast-food favorites from the USA. If you find yourself hankering for a bacon & eggs breakfast at some point during your trip, there are many buffets that will oblige, as well as dozens of vendors selling hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream, and traditional carnival fare. So whether you're in search of authentic Mexican or feeling a bit homesick, the restaurants and dining establishments on the Rivera Maya will accommodate you.

Adventure Parks

Anyone who likes to mix in physical activity with their vacationing won't be disappointed by the Riviera Maya. Several eco-parks like the close-by Xplore offer a variety of interesting, fun, and challenging options for the adventure-seeking tourist. These include a three-mile jungle ride that ushers you through rainforests, over rivers, and draws you down into mysterious underground caves, as well as unlimited opportunities to ride the system of zip-lines that have been erected throughout the park. Hung at varying heights, from hammock-level to over ten stories tall, the speed and thrill of traveling on these lines will leave you breathless, and make it very easy to remember your experience vacationing at the Riviera Maya!

In addition to the zip-lines, another very popular activity is the underground swim. With an adjustable time length of up to 40 minutes, you can get through the series of hauntingly splendid caverns under your own power, or requisition a boat to take you drifting through them as you relax with a camera or some favorite reading material.

Mayan Heritage

The resort-centered and jungle adventure activities aren't your only choices for filling up your vacation in Riviera Maya with fun - and even a little education. Not far from the resort beaches are some of the world's most remarkable archaeological sites. At the port of Tulum, an ancient Maya walled city peers out over the crystal-clear water. Tulum fell before the invading Spanish during the 1500s, bringing an end to centuries of prosperity, but the citizens were decimated by disease rather than outright conflict, so the city remains amazingly well-preserved even today; it's one of the most thoroughly intact sites of any Pre-Columbian culture in Central America. The towering walls, huge pyramids, temples, and the nearby biological preserve will delight anyone with a bent towards local history or ecological conservation. What better way to put an educational spin on a relaxing vacation than to spend the day swimming with dolphins and climbing 2000 year old pyramids?
