Taking The Stress Out Of Vacation

Make a portable washing machine with a plastic bag. Save money by skipping expensive coin-operated washers and dryers when you travel by using a do-it-yourself tip. Find or pack a large and sturdy plastic bag, and add a little laundry soap and water. Put your clothes in the bag, and shake. Drain the soapy water and repeat the process with clean water, then hang the clothes to dry.

Explore new lands and expand your horizons. Try your best to always explore new places you haven't been to before. You only get one shot at life and you don't want to spend it visiting the same city over and over. So go out into the world and explore new places and live new adventures.

Before you travel internationally, learn where your country's embassies and consulates are in your destination country. These are not resources for the casual traveler. Hopefully you will never need them. If you find yourself in legal trouble, though, consulates and embassies can provide vital assistance in navigating unfamiliar and unfriendly legal waters.

If you're traveling with kids, it's tempting to let them all tune out with their own mp3 players, but consider bringing along some books on CD. Having something literate and interesting for the whole family to listen to is not only entertaining and interesting, but provides a common experience that each family member can take forward with them into life ("Hey, remember when I was ten, and we listened to Black Beauty on the way to Maine?"). It's the stuff of which fond memories are made.

If you want to bring back souvenirs with you, make sure you take an extra empty suitcase. You should also research ahead of time if there are any restrictions on certain products, such as alcohol. You might be allowed to bring home with you only a certain quantity of food and beverages.

Instead of putting your liquids in a plastic bag to prevent them from leaking, try unscrewing the lid and putting a piece of plastic from a grocery bag over the top and screwing the lid on over it. While a zip-lock bag will prevent spills from ruining things, this method will prevent things from spilling in the first place.

Use travel as an educational tool for the members of your family. If you take reasonable precautions, there is no reason to fear travel to the developing world, and it can be a great chance to show your children how the world outside of your country works. Spending time abroad is a great way to build an understanding of, and tolerance for, other cultures.

When traveling to a country outside of North America and Western Europe, carry cash or pre-purchased traveler's checks. You cannot count on your credit or debit card to work the same way it does at home, nor is there any guarantee of access to ATMs. Converting your money or buying traveler's checks before you leave also protects you against unscrupulous money changers.

Don't let the bedbugs bite. Bedbugs have become prevalent at hotels and motels. When you arrive at your hotel room, instead of tossing it onto the bed or sofa, put your luggage on a hard surface like a dresser, table, or luggage stand. This will prevent bedbugs from crawling into your suitcase and traveling home with you. Also, before you tuck yourself in, do a thorough check of your sheets for signs of bedbugs.
