Upon giving thought on where to vacation, think about holidays in Madeira. Madeira is a cluster of islands in Portugal, located in the Atlantic Ocean. The islands were discovered around 1419 by Portuguese explorers whose leader was Henry the Navigator. No natives were about the island, so many Portuguese settled there, including farmers.

Though Portuguese is its official language, those on the island also speak English. Learning important Portuguese phrases before visiting is crucial.

Funchal is its capital city and a gateway for commercial business and tourists alike. This is where visitors arriving on ship will dock. For those traveling by airplane, the airport is not far from Funchal.

Madeira is famous for its handcrafted art and embroidery, so a shopping trip is not complete without purchasing a few key items to take back home. Its wine is known around the world, and having firsthand access is a privilege.

Volcanic activity is what the Madeira Islands were created from millions of years ago. The volcanoes left tunnels and caves, which can be explored for those craving some history. Other locations to visit in Madeira are the Levadas, a system of aqueducts used to make sure water reach drier, more isolated areas. A visit to the museum, the Madeira Story Centre, will teach about the history of the island, while one can enjoy its food and shop for souvenirs. Remember to take in the view of beautiful beaches with clear waters and the botanical garden.

Travelers there for the New Year have to participate in the grandest fireworks show in the world. If visiting in June, there are celebrations that honor at least three saints, Sao Joao, Santo Antonio, and Sao Pedro. With holidays in Madeira being available year-round, and with it having an historic past, it may not matter what time of the year a holiday occurs. Everyone will find something they enjoy.
