Amazing Venues for Sport in the UK

Amazing Venues for Sport in the UK

by Steve Alexander

London is home to the Olympic Games this summer and the English capital will have the attention of the world on it. Across the country though, there are various other top sporting venues that should be checked out if you didn't manage to get tickets to the Games. Some of the very best are looked at here.

Nottingham is home to the National Ice Centre as you'd expect from the birthplace and training location of Torvill and Dean. As well as being home to the Great Britain Short Track Speed Skating squad and the Nottingham Panthers ice hockey team, this 43 million pound centre was the UK's first twin Olympic-sized ice rink facility.

Much of the conversation in the football-mad city of Manchester is about football, and you certainly won't be disappointed. Old Trafford, or the Theatre of Dreams as it is also known, is the second largest football stadium in England after Wembley, and has a capacity of 75, 811 as well as an award-winning museum.

Some of the legends of the club such as former striker Andrew Cole can also take you on a tour around the stadium. Alternatively, you can catch another impressive sporting match by taking the short walk to the nearby Lancashire Cricket Club. Manchester City are not to be outdone though as their Etihad Stadium is the fifth largest in the Premier League with a capacity of 47,805.

There have been many highs and lows is Sheffield's rich footballing history with the latter being the the Hillsborough stadium disaster. Including ice hockey, basketball and speedway, the City of Steel is actually represented in every major team sport played in England. With a capacity of up to 50,000 the Don Valley athletics stadium is a popular venue, as well as the Crucible Theatre, which has been the official home of the World Snooker Championships since 1977.
