Guanajuato is the name of a state in the central part of Mexico. It lies about halfway between Mexico City and Guadalajara, with the capital a drive of around four hours away. This state is very much at the heart of Mexico, not only geographically but historically too because it was the cradle of the movement for Mexican independence.

The state's capital is known as Guanajuato too. It's a World Heritage Site and it was here that the first battle in Mexico's War of Independence was fought. With its colonial architecture and mountain location, it's one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico and also home to the fascinating Mummy Museum.

The state is home to the World Heritage Sites of San Miguel de Allende and the Sanctuary of Atotonilco too. San Miguel de Allende's most famous son was Ignacio Allende, who was a leading figure in the fight for independence. The beautiful colonial city is known as a haven for artists too and has a vibrant cultural scene. Speaking of art, don't miss the lovely Sanctuary of Atotonilco, which is reminiscent of the Sistine Chapel.

Modern Mexico started with a cry for independence, uttered by Father Miguel Hidalgo. He did this in Dolores Hidalgo, which now boasts the Independence Museum and other sights related to the independence movement. It's also the town where Jose Alfredo Jimenez is buried. Jimenez was that most important figure in 'ranchera', a type of Mexican country music.

A great way to explore Guanajuato state is to follow a themed tourist route, such as the Independence Route. For ancient sites, try the archaeological route and for religious architecture, the route of monasteries. If you love shopping, you simply can't do without your own transport when visiting the state. There are tourist routes that have handicrafts as their theme and they will take you to towns and villages that specialize in items such as silverware, bronze, glass, woolen products such as serapes, woodwork, liquors and food products. Dolores Hidalgo is famous for its ceramics and Leon, the largest city in the state, is considered the world's shoe capital, with well-known brand names as well as specialty shoe stores.

However, you may want to consider getting a driver too and for this, it's best to go online first and book ahead of your arrival.
