Enjoying San Diego Has Multiple Advantages

Enjoying San Diego Has Multiple Advantages

by Heather Hunnefeld

San Diego is a great Californian destination, with sun, sea and fun. For families, couples and singles, its a Pacific coast hotspot with an authentic Spanish feel. Without the hype of LA (or the traffic), this is a place to lie back on a golden beach, to take in the attractions and enjoy some great hospitality.

Just thirty kilometers north of Mexico's border, San Diego is the deep south and west of America's mainland with a stunning climate. With all year round sunshine, it has more than 200 days above seventy degrees Fahrenheit every year. As a beach holiday spot, places don't get better than San Diego.

There's a great deal to do, whether tastes run to surfing, enjoying the nightlife of the second biggest city in California or reliving your favorite Top Gun scenes at Coronado. The fifteen beaches include those with all amenities plus more isolated, wild areas with clean sands and plenty of space for everyone. Surfers find great waves at Pacific Beach and Black's Beach.

Here are some tips for your vacation. Accommodation is one key decision and there's plenty of choice for all budgets. For 5-star luxury, pick the Hyatt, Hilton, Andaz or Hotel Palomar amongst others. Those wanting resort-type environs will find great options as well. Grand Del Mar sits in a spectacular coastal canyon, offering genuine charm. Loews Coronado Bay Resort and Spa has waterfront luxury.

There are great budget options. When looking for a B&B, motel or guesthouse, there are hundreds available. Highly recommended are some cheap hotels in San Diego: the Comfort Inn on Mission Bay, Day's Inns and Best Westerns, but if seeking something more individual, you can't do better than La Pensione Hotel, in San Diego's Little Italy. Right in downtown, it has a well-deserved reputation as one of the best.

Location is key, because the city is quite big. It depends on what you want to do. Mission and Pacific Beach are to the north; Coronado is on a long spit of land that protects the natural harbor. To the south is the Imperial Beach area. Many vacationers prefer the north, away from the airport and downtown.

Whilst staying here, there are certain must-sees. San Diego Zoo, made famous in Madagascar, is a certain one. One of the world's best zoos, it's west off Highway 5 near Balboa Park. Or head to Miramar, famous from the movie Top Gun and base for today's Marine Corps Air Station. Take the road bridge to wealthy Coronado to sun yourself on the sands, with a spectacular mountain backdrop. Head across the waves, dolphin spotting.

San Diego makes a great setting for exploring the many delights of south California. Los Angeles and Hollywood can be reached via a scenic coastal drive just two hours to the north. Joshua Tree National Park lies only three hours away inland. The Sierra Nevada and desert are right behind you and reached by an easy enough drive. The city is laid back, exciting and a great place for your vacation, especially if a bit of peace and quiet on some of the world's finest beaches happens to be your idea of relaxation.
