When some people conjure a vision of a perfect vacation, they often see exotic locations, grand adventures, intriguing nightlife, beautiful beaches and lots of sun. This island is the world's tiniest landmass to ever be under the possession of two nations at once. Just 37 square miles total, the land is split between France and the Netherlands Antilles. For an excess of 350 years, there has been cooperation on among the territory holders which is quite instrumental in the overall success.

France actually has ownership of roughly two thirds of this land, making that portion part of the European Community. The remaining third, which belongs to the Dutch, is included in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The arrangement between the co-possessors has been peaceful and amazingly successful for more than three hundred and fifty years.

The two owning nations have agreed to not erecting a physical boundary between them as the openness provides a fluid community feel and permits residents and visitors to travel freely and enjoy the unspoiled landscape. All the adventures, activities and sites may be experienced by anyone at anytime. There is an incredible amount of things to do in this small area.

The year long, near perfect environment for enjoyment and relaxation is one of the island's more popular attributes. The tropical climate offers plenty of sunshine and temperatures that go between mid range sixties as the lows, to sometimes close to one hundred for a high, though the average runs about a pleasant seventy-eight degrees Fahrenheit. The heat is often disrupted by short and sudden rain showers in the afternoons which set the atmosphere for a wonderful evening.

This paradise of the tropics is an oasis of breathtaking beauty and inspirational scenery. A mountain range is at the center of this island and its rolling hills provide an excellent backdrop for adventures such as zip lining, horseback riding, exploring, hiking or just meditating and finding one's connection with nature. Small, charming villages are located sporadically, allowing visitors to experience the unique cultures and do some shopping for local goods.

All around the island are some of the most incredible white sanded beaches ever seen. The largest in the Caribbean, Simpson Bay Lagoon is a prime spot for prime relaxation. With the exception of just two narrow, draw bridge spanned channels, the area is completely landlocked yet holds a sizable fleet of luxurious yachts and still boasts ample room for the vessels to actually take a casual sail.

Individuals of all ages and preferences will find plenty of interesting activities here ranging from swimming in sparkling turquoise waters to horseback riding through the hills or on the beaches. There are many caves where one might enjoy snorkeling among the amazing coral structures and interacting with a colorful array of tropical sea life. During the days, ferries run regular trips to and from the surrounding islands of Saba, St. Barths, Anguilla and St. Eustatius, and at night, the celebrations really begin.
