St Maarten Activities For Visitors To Enjoy

by Imelda Reid

Around half the Caribbean island of Saint Martin is taken up by St. Maarten. While the size of this area is relatively small, it is big on tourists and attracts many to visit annually. Those that arrive can take their choice of a extensive range of St Maarten activities to ensure they have a time to remember.

The Caribbean waters off the coast of St. Maarten are one of its biggest attractions and there are many adventure pursuits to try in this. These range from swimming and kayaking to the more adrenaline-pumping experience of surfing and jet skiing. However, these are only a few of the many water activities that can be tried on the island

There are plenty of boats that will take tourists on a trip out to deeper water. This includes those owned by diving clubs, with these organizations enabling anyone to get in the water with some scuba gear. This provides the chance to get up close to some sea life such as rays and turtles or dive to the bottom to see some old ships that sunk to the depths around the island.

The waters around St. Maarten are teeming with fish and there are a number of operators that take advantage of this by offering a deep sea fishing experience. Visitors that set sail on these will have the chance to catch some big game species, with the crew knowing just where this is possible. This could find guests reeling in a sailfish or tuna before the day is out.

There are sports to try on land, with an 18-hole course available for golfing enthusiasts. Anyone that wants to try horse riding can do so at the Seaside Nature Park area and this is open to all levels of experience. Other popular sporting activities to try include biking and trekking the interior trails of the island.

Taking a tour is a way to get some great photos of the best attractions that St. Maarten has to offer. There are a couple of forts to see on the island and an old salt factory is another great location to visit. A trip around Philipsburg is also recommended, with the historic buildings and museums in this town being the best places to take in.

Shopping is a popular pastime on the island to search for some mementos and souvenirs of a trip. The added advantage for this on St. Maarten is that it is a duty free region. A trip to the town center streets in Philipsburg is the best idea for this, with a number of retail outlets on these offering a wide variety of goods for sale.

One of the top attractions on the island is St. Maarten Park and this is especially the case for children. They will enjoy seeing the animals that call the zoo in the park home. A huge play area for kids is also located in the park, and this has plenty of space and playground equipment to keep children happy for hours.
