Traveling With Your Pet

Traveling With Your Pet

by Joseph Tranturder

Taking a vacation can relieve a huge burden for you mentally and actually help you perform well in the future at work and home, but too many people head on vacation and come back disappointed or frustrated rather than relaxed and relieved. Here are some pointers to help you learn to enjoy the vacation and come back rejuvenated.

Plan Ahead Having things planned out before your trip can help relieve any stress that you may experience. Things to check before you go include the rules and regulations of flying. Make sure your back will fit and it is not overweight as it is intensely frustrating to have to pay an extra thirty bucks because your bag was two pounds over the limit. Know the safely rules and regulations of the country you are planning to fly to and if you are going foreign that your passport is in order so nothing goes wrong in transit.

The exact tips and helpful hints on how to best travel with your pet in the car will depend on the type of animal, but consider the following few tips for traveling with dogs in the car and adapt them to your pet if needed.

The very first helpful tip that travelers should try to remember is that if the dog or any other pet is not feeling well a long car ride will only make it worse. Before starting out on the trip, it may be helpful to make sure that the dog is not sick by taking them to your vet for a quick checkup and to get any additional vaccinations that may be required.

Learn to Pack Start with a blank piece of paper and start listing all of the items you need to bring with you on the trip. Show the list to someone else to verify that you aren't missing anything. Mark the essential items that you would need on any trip and save the list for your next trip. Pack your suitcase and check off the items on your list. Generally start with your shoes on the bottom (stuffing socks in side of them) and fill in any remaining gaps. Lay a towel over top of your shoes and start packing your clothing starting with jeans, then shirts, then dress pants and shirts. Pack toiletries and other items in another compartment or use clothing to separate them from your more expensive clothing. Make sure that any liquids are sealed in a bag in case of spilling. Zip up your bag and check the dimensions so you don't get in trouble at the airport. Weight yourself on a scale and then pick up your bag and weigh yourself again. Use the difference between the two numbers to get the weight of your bag. Place your bag in the car or at the door so you don't end up forgetting it.

On your trip there is the possibility that you may get injured, heaven forbid, but the reality needs to be faced. Your health insurance will probably not cover you out of country so you need to get yourself travel insurance or you could end up paying a huge hospital bill in another country by yourself. Shop around online to find a good deal before you go. If you do need to pay a bill or pay anything for that matter make sure to use a debit card.

Relax Puritan/Protestant mentalities have been the foundation of the U.S. The mentality insists that you always be working and producing but during your vacation you need to learn to relax and enjoy yourself. Step back and realize the benefits of doing nothing and not feeling any guilt about it. Do whatever you prefer to do. If you are an adventure seeker than plan fun activities into your trip. If you prefer to sleep then do so. It is your vacation and no one should tell you how to experience it. As you are enjoying your vacation make sure that you are present and don't hide behind the lens of a camera. Rather than creating photos to try and remember the experience you never had put down the camera and enjoy your vacation.

Unplug (at least a little) In this day and age it can very difficult to unplug from technology and reaching back to my previous point (your vacation, your rules) you can decide on how much you want to unplug. However, by unplugging you draw your focus to your surroundings and the experience you are having rather than on the virtual experience that you have every day of your life. Leave work back home and don't bring it with you. It is definitely ok not to think about work during your vacation so close your laptop and shut off the phone.

In addition, while it seems to be one of their favorite past times, owners should not allow their dog to stick their head out the windows while traveling at high speeds because the wind and particulates in the air have the ability to damage the dogs eyes, nose, and face. By following these few basic tips, a pet owner will be able to successfully and safely travel with their pet in tow.
