The Skinny On The Pessoa System
by Cornelia White
For those who do not know, a pessoa training system is a program that will enable horses to be able to gain the muscles that they need in order to carry carriages. In order for the horses to be able to gain strength, they would also need to work out like humans. This system is something like a workout specifically designed for horses.
Now to give people an overview on how this system works, it is best to know about some of the equipment that is being used here. First, there are the ropes that will be pulled by a pulley which is attached to what is known as lunge lines. These lunge lines are adjustable and one can adjust the difficulty level any time.
Of course there are steps to take in order to put these devices on the horse so that it will be ready for the training. Now to start, one has to first attach three things to the steed namely the headstall, the pad, and the surcingle. When that is done, one may or may not put horse boots or leg wrappings.
The chambon will then be attached to the surcingle in order to hold the horse down. While attaching the chambon, one has to be sure that it is not attached too tight or too loose. If it is too tight, the horse will be uncomfortable but if it is too loose, he may be able to shake the chambon off immediately.
Once that is already done, take the neck extender and put it around the rear area of the steed and attach it to both of his sides. Now take note that this thing to be put somewhere near the two hind legs of the animal or otherwise known as the hocks. This would control the steed and discourage him from making wild movements.
Once all of the attachments has already been done, then the last thing to do would be to bring the horse to the lunging area. Now the first thing to do in here would be to try to push the horse to go forward at a rather fast pace. It should start going around in a small circle if it has just started the training.
As the horse gradually gets stronger and stronger, the trainer may increase the strain if he feels like it. Now what makes this system interesting is that it can help that the steed still have a proper posture. The two parts that will be able to help the horse with this would be the neck extender and the chambon as these are the parts that are attached near the neck to the feet area.
So basically, these are some of the steps that a horse will be going through during a pessoa system training program. Now take note that this training is only specifically for horses that will be meant for carriages. This will give them the sufficient amount of strength that they will need to pull an entire carriage with people inside.
