Experience The African Wilderness With A Tanzania Safari
by Jocelyn Davidson
Nature is responsible for some of the most incredible experiences imaginable. One of these is to see the annual migration of the wildebeest on the African plains. With a Tanzania safari, you can witness this spectacular display and be one with nature too.
The Republic of Tanzania is located in East Africa, with Kenya to the north and Mozambique to the south. The country has a long and colorful history and is a popular tourist destination. This is no surprise, with magic places such as the island of Zanzibar, with its Arabic architecture and great beaches, to explore.
Some visitors come to the country to enjoy its beaches and world-class diving but for most, a true highlight is going on safari. You'll find packages designed with your specific interests in mind, whether these are hunting, photography or local culture. At the same time, you'll get to understand why Africa manages to find a permanent place in the hearts of all who visit her.
The Tanzanian people have realized that their wildlife is one of their greatest treasures and they've created a range of parks where the many different species are protected. Popular destinations with tourists include the area around Mount Kilimanjaro, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Olduvai Gorge and the Udzungwa Mountains. However, the Serengeti is the one everyone wants to experience, especially in January and February when the wildebeest migrate. Other animals that call the different parks their home include zebras, warthogs, giraffes, monkeys, elephants and predators such as lions, leopards and crocodiles. The many bird species add some extra color.
Many safari companies specialize in luxury safaris. These include accommodation in stylish lodges or tents that look like something out of a Karen Blixen novel, with gauzy white mosquito nets draped over beds fit for royalty and including catered gourmet meals. However, there are plenty of options for the more budget-conscious traveler too, even if these offer more basic tented accommodation. Safaris usually include your transport as well as knowledgeable nature guides who will know where to find the wildlife.
The Tanzanian climate is notoriously hot and it may be tempting to visit during rainy season, when things cool down a bit. However, the dry season is a much better time to visit. This is when the migration takes place. The vegetation is not quite as dense and it's easier to spot the animals, especially when they come to the watering holes for a drink. Besides, the risk of malaria is lower during the dry season.
Getting to the country is very easy. You can fly directly from several airports in Europe, Asia and other African countries. The main international airports are located in Dar es Salaam and near Kilimanjaro but there are domestic flights to places throughout the country, so you can easily visit lodges in different areas.
An easy way to visit is to opt for an all-inclusive safari package. Your travel agent will be able to find one for you or you can look online. Book well in advance though.
